An elegant antique oak occasional table dating from the turn of the 20th century, displaying the refined proportions and decorative details characteristic of late Historicism and Eclecticism.
Its slender turned columns, shaped feet, lower shelf and subtle brass details give the piece a particularly graceful appearance. The table has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration and is ready for everyday use.
Construction and materials
The columns, legs, lower shelf and structural supports beneath the upper section are made from solid oak. The rectangular top is finished with a beautiful natural oak veneer, showcasing the expressive grain and warm character of the timber.
A practical shallow drawer is positioned directly beneath the top and fitted with a small turned wooden knob. The drawer bottom is made of plywood and is traditionally fixed from underneath with small nails.
Four elegant turned oak columns connect the upper section with the spacious lower shelf. Decorative brass collars at the bases of the columns provide a refined contrast to the rich colour of the oak.
The whole structure rests on four distinctive shaped feet, completing the light and elegant silhouette of the piece.
Period and style
We date the table to approximately 1890–1910, most likely circa 1900.
Stylistically, it belongs to the Eclectic / late Historicist period, drawing inspiration from traditional 19th-century furniture design. Its symmetrical construction, turned supports and shaped feet are typical decorative elements of elegant salon furniture from around the turn of the century.
Condition
The table has undergone a comprehensive restoration.
The timber has been carefully cleaned and refinished to reveal the natural beauty and grain of the oak. The structure is solid and stable, and the drawer functions correctly.
The restoration has preserved the historical character of the piece while making it suitable for regular use in a contemporary interior.
